What to Expect at Your First Chiropractic Visit
If you've never been to a chiropractor before, you probably have questions. What actually happens? Will it hurt? How long does it take? Here's the straightforward rundown of what to expect when you walk through my door.
Before you arrive
No special preparation needed. Wear comfortable clothes you can move in. You won't need to change into a gown or anything like that.
If you have any imaging (X-rays, MRIs) from another provider, bring those along or have them sent over. They're not required, but they can be helpful if you have them.
The consultation (10-15 minutes)
We start by talking. I want to understand what's going on, how long it's been happening, what makes it better or worse, and what you've already tried. I'll ask about your work, your activities, and any relevant medical history.
This isn't a checklist I'm running through. I'm trying to understand your specific situation so I can figure out what's actually causing your problem, not just where it hurts.
The examination (10-15 minutes)
Next, I'll do a physical examination. This typically includes:
- Posture assessment (how you stand and hold yourself)
- Range of motion testing (how well different parts move)
- Palpation (feeling the spine and muscles for tension, misalignment, or tenderness)
- Orthopedic and neurological tests if needed (checking reflexes, strength, sensation)
I'm looking for what's moving well, what isn't, and where the actual problem is. Sometimes where you feel pain isn't where the problem originates.
The explanation
Before I do anything, I'll tell you what I found and what I think is going on. I'll explain it in plain English, not medical jargon. If I think chiropractic care can help, I'll tell you what I recommend and why. If I think you need to see someone else, I'll tell you that too.
This is also when you can ask questions. There's no rush.
Your first adjustment
If everything looks appropriate for chiropractic care, we'll do your first adjustment that same visit. No waiting, no "come back next week to start treatment."
What an adjustment feels like: You'll lie on a treatment table and I'll use my hands to apply controlled pressure to specific joints. You may hear a popping or cracking sound. That's just gas being released from the joint, similar to cracking your knuckles. It's not bones grinding or anything breaking.
Does it hurt? Most people feel pressure but not pain. If something is really inflamed or sensitive, there might be brief discomfort, but I'll warn you and work within your tolerance. You're always in control. If something doesn't feel right, just say so.
How long does it take? The adjustment itself is quick, usually just a few minutes. The whole first visit runs about 30-45 minutes total.
After the adjustment
Most people feel better immediately. Some feel a bit sore, like after a workout, for a day or two. That's normal. Your body is adjusting to being in proper alignment again.
I'll give you any relevant home care advice: stretches, posture tips, things to avoid. Nothing complicated.
We'll also discuss next steps. Depending on your situation, I might recommend a follow-up in a few days, a week, or just "come back if you need to." There's no pressure to book anything, and I won't try to sell you a 20-visit package.
What I won't do
I won't show you scary X-rays with red circles. I won't tell you your spine is degenerating and you need immediate intervention. I won't push supplements, pillows, or gadgets. And I won't make you feel bad for waiting to come in or for not scheduling your next appointment on the spot.
My job is to figure out what's wrong, fix what I can, and be honest about what I can't. That's it.
The cost
Your first visit is $60, which includes the consultation, exam, and your first adjustment. No hidden fees. We're a cash practice, so no insurance paperwork, no copay surprises.
